FASHION: That's 70's Show

When I decided to move down to Abu Dhabi from Toronto this summer, I had promised myself a few things. To recharge, get healthy and define new career goals. But there was something else, I wanted to experiment, rediscover and to re-imagine the woman that I was. So when I had unpacked my suitcase those few weeks ago, I had decided this would be it. To once again play with fashion and take a chance with the new. So let the sartorialist adventures begin!

I had fallen for this seasons 70's vibrations with arms wide open. It all started when I braved the Zara fitting rooms and pulled on a pair of palazzo pants and was surprised by the way they fell on my body. No ballooning here! I felt like a desert princess gliding down marble steps.

The goal then was to look current, stay moderate and keep cool. And with simple cuts, adjusted silhouettes and light materials this trend was easy to adopt and translate for this region.  Looking for a little more inspo I pulled one of my favourite looks from Chloé's spring/summer 2015 collection.

This season, the Chloé woman is seen as light, bright and quintessentially French. A feeling I thought would be perfect for casual nights out or for weekends sat by the corniche. So I recreated the look with a mint Studio Dress by Zara and then paired it with the Universal Hand long Necklace by Zoe & Morgan. I particularly love the necklace as it features the "Khamsa", a palm shaped amulet popular here in the Middle East and North Africa as a symbol of protection against the evil eye.

Above are a few of my current favourites, influenced by all things groovy.

  1. Mint tea at the XVA Art hotel and Cafe in Dubai is an absolute must. Built with traditional detailing, this boutique hotel/gallery/cafe are my design wet dreams are made of. The goal is to spend at least two weekends tucked away in this little haven on the other side of the city.
  2. There is always Zadie, my go to travel companion, her books never fail me.
  3. Obsessed with these recycled glass and brass boxes I spotted at À la
  4. Tom Ford Costa Azzurra, because this is what an expensive holiday smells like.
  5. Bop to JUCE! Because they are fun, bold and remind me of an era where girl power meant something.
And that's it! My first little trend break down of sorts. I hope to do a few more of these in the future as I try more looks and build inspiration boards. Are feeling that 70's vibe? If so drop me a line!
